What ink or toner does my Brother printer use?

Check the letter after the dash in your model number. J models, like the MFC-J4335DW, are inkjet printers that use ink cartridges. L models, like the HL-L2465DW, are laser printers that use toner and a separate drum unit. Find your printer in the table below, search for your model number at the top of the page, or check the number printed on your current cartridge.

Brother laser printers: the toner and drum are two separate parts

Many customers don't realize this. In a Brother laser printer, the toner cartridge sits inside the drum unit, and they come out of the printer together. To replace the toner, you slide the old toner cartridge out of the drum and slide the new one into the same drum. You don't need a new drum each time. The drum lasts through several toner cartridges. A DR830 drum, for example, is rated for about 15,000 pages, or roughly five TN830XL toner cartridges.

When your printer says the drum is near the end of its life, replace it. If you're due for both, our toner and drum combo packs, like the TN830XL toner and DR830 drum 5-pack, include four toners and one drum.

Which size should I buy?

Most Brother cartridges come in standard, XL and sometimes XXL sizes. Larger sizes cost more up front but print more pages. For example, the TN830XL prints about 3,000 pages, compared with about 1,200 for the standard TN830. If you print every week, the larger size usually costs less per page and means fewer replacements.

Compatible or remanufactured?

Compatible cartridges are newly made to fit your Brother printer. Remanufactured cartridges are original Brother cartridges that have been cleaned, refilled and tested. The popular cartridges in the table above are compatible.

Common questions

Will these cartridges work in my printer?

Yes, as long as your printer model is listed on the product page. Every cartridge is tested to work with the models listed. Find your printer in the table above or search for your model number. If you're not sure, call us at 818-534-2660 with your exact printer model, and we'll confirm the right cartridge for you.

Will the XL cartridge fit my printer?

Yes. If your printer is listed for the XL cartridge, it fits. Some XL cartridges are physically larger than the standard size, and printers are designed to hold both. Other XL cartridges are the same size as the standard but hold more ink or toner.

How fast will my order ship?

Orders placed by 12 noon Pacific time, Monday through Friday, ship the same day. Orders placed after noon or on a weekend ship the next business day. Delivery usually takes 1 to 5 business days, depending on where you are and which of our warehouses has your cartridge in stock. Orders over $65 ship free within the contiguous U.S., based on the item total after coupons and before tax and shipping. Need it faster? Call us with your address, and we'll quote an expedited shipping option.

My printer doesn't recognize the new ink cartridge. What should I do?

First, make sure all tape and protective covers are off the cartridge. If the printer still doesn't recognize it, a power reset usually fixes it, and it works for most printer brands:

  1. Remove the ink cartridges.
  2. Turn the printer off and unplug it.
  3. Wait 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  5. Reinstall the cartridges.

If that doesn't solve it, call us at 818-534-2660 and we'll help.

I replaced the toner or drum, but my printer still says "Replace Toner" or "Replace Drum."

Your printer keeps a page count for the toner and the drum, and it doesn't always detect that a new toner cartridge or drum unit was installed. When that happens, the message keeps showing either "Replace Toner" or "Replace Drum" even though the new toner cartridge or drum unit was installed. Resetting the count from the printer's control panel clears it. The reset steps are different for every printer model. Have your exact printer model ready and call us at 818-534-2660 (Monday through Friday, 7am to 5pm Pacific), and we'll walk you through it.

What if a cartridge doesn't work?

Call us first, and we'll troubleshoot it with you. Most problems are solved over the phone. If the cartridge still doesn't work, we'll send you a replacement. If you'd prefer a refund, we'll email you a return authorization (RMA) within 12 to 24 hours with instructions for returning the product. Every cartridge is covered by our 180-day warranty.

Will using non-Brother ink or toner void my printer warranty?

Generally no. In the U.S., the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prevents manufacturers from voiding a printer warranty just because you used another brand of supplies. Damage caused directly by a cartridge may not be covered by the printer maker, which is one reason we test every cartridge we sell.
